Good Morning Pittsfield!
with John Krol
Berkshire County's most informative radio hour...
Weekdays from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. 89.7 FM, and Channel 17 in Pittsfield, Richmond and Dalton. |
Welcome to Good Morning Pittsfield, home of the smartest talk in town, along with news from the Berkshire Eagle, the finest musical performers, weekly features on Berkshire nightlife, and much, much more. Good Morning Pittsfield is the anchor program for Pittsfield's own community radio station, WTBR-89.7 FM, which is filling a void of grassroots programming in a day in age when commercial radio continues shedding its local identity, in favor of automated network programming. In addition to being heard over the airwaves throughout the Berkshires, GMP can also be seen live on PCTV's Education Channel 17 in Pittsfield, Richmond and Dalton, making it the Berkshires' first television/radio simulcast.
Good Morning Pittsfield began as somewhat of a response to the rising tide of negativity that was filling the airwaves of Pittsfield in the several years prior to its inception in 2006. As local radio had become dominated by a call-in program that belittled public officials with one-liners and “gotcha” zingers, comprehensive public discourse had been taken out of the radio mix on many levels. Good Morning Pittsfield offers a smart, clear discussion that allows guests to articulate their ideas within the context of important issues in the City of Pittsfield and beyond. As a music lover, the host, John Krol has also encouraged music as a significant part of the show, as he has welcomed local performers from the outset, including Tony Lee Thomas, Jack Waldheim, Andy Kelly, Mary Verdi, and Mark Kelso, among many others. As the program evolved, news was added to the mix, and Krol recruited Taconic High School students to serve as the news anchors to further develop their skills and the program. In March 2007, after a great deal of work with Pittsfield Community Television Education Coordinator Shawn Serre and the approval of PCTV, cameras were installed in the studio, along with a television control board, and Good Morning Pittsfield became the Berkshires’ first radio/television simulcast. Following a summer hiatus in 2007, the program was re-launched in September 2007 with new visual upgrades for television and the continuation and addition of weekly special segments on cooking, Berkshire nightlife, and do-it-yourself housework. In May 2008, Good Morning Pittsfield made an agreement with
The Berkshire Eagle allowing listeners to hear the latest from the finest and most comprehensive news source in the county.
